What I found changes the way I think about SEO.

According to Surfer's analysis, 67.82% of sources cited in Google's AI Overviews don't even rank in the top 10 organic results for that query.

I've been studying how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode pick which sites to cite

AI doesn't rank pages. It pulls specific passages that help it answer confidently. A single paragraph on your site might get cited while the rest gets ignored completely.

Here are 7 ways to show up in AI search results

1. Go beyond your own website

According to Yext's study of 6.8 million AI citations, 86% come from brand-controlled sources.

But the other 14% often decides whether you show up for opinion and comparison queries.

ConvertMate found 46.7% of Perplexity's top citations come from Reddit.

Brands on review sites like G2 and Trustpilot have a 3x higher chance of getting cited by ChatGPT.

Be active on Reddit. Publish on YouTube (transcripts become citable). Keep review profiles current. Invest in digital PR.

2. Keep content fresh

According to Ahrefs, AI prefers content that's 25.7% fresher than organic search results.

ConvertMate found freshness accounts for roughly 40% of Perplexity's ranking factors.

But just changing the publish date without real updates doesn't work. AI can tell the difference.

Update key pages monthly with real changes and a visible "Last updated" date.

3. Use schema markup strategically

ConvertMate's research shows proper schema can deliver up to 10% visibility improvement on Perplexity.

Focus on Article, FAQ, HowTo, and Organization schema.

Sharp HealthCare did this and saw an 843% increase in clicks from AI search features in nine months.

4. Build topical depth

AI breaks every question into 5-10 sub-queries and searches for all of them.

According to Surfer's analysis, ranking for both the main query AND its fan-outs makes you 161% more likely to appear in AI answers versus ranking for the main query alone.

Map the sub-questions AI would generate. Build content clusters around them.

5. Publish original data

A Princeton GEO study found that adding statistics increased AI visibility by 30-40% with no other changes.

According to Ahrefs, 67% of ChatGPT's top 1,000 cited pages come from original research or first-hand data.

If you're just rephrasing what already exists, AI has no reason to cite you.

Run surveys. Publish benchmarks. Turn case studies into quotable evidence.

6. Structure content for extraction

According to Search Engine Land, 72.4% of pages cited by ChatGPT had a short direct answer right after a question-based heading.

AI pulls chunks of 75-225 words that stand alone. If your answer is buried in a wall of text, it gets skipped.

7. Track your AI visibility

75% of Google AI Mode sessions end without an external click.

Rankings and CTR don't tell the full story anymore.

Monitor where your brand shows up across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.
